Are We Listening to Our Hearts? Are We Motivated by Duty or Devotion?

Good Morning Friends,

Today we meet Martha, overwhelmed and frustrated, and Paul, transformed by grace. Both show us how God meets people who feel out of balance, emotionally, spiritually, and socially, and draws them back into their calling. Their stories ask us a simple but searching question: Are we living from duty… or devotion?

Scripture Summary

Galatians 1:13–24 Paul remembers his former life — driven by zeal, tradition, and violence. But God interrupts him, reveals Christ, and reshapes his purpose. The persecutor becomes a preacher. His life shifts from duty to devotion, from striving to calling.

Luke 10:38–42 Martha welcomes Jesus but becomes distracted and resentful. Mary sits at His feet, listening. Jesus gently tells Martha that her worry has drowned out what matters most. She is busy, but not blessed, because her work has lost its center.

Message: Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough on what is important. We get things done, but not always the right things. Like Martha, we become distracted. Like Paul, we can be driven by expectations, culture, or habit rather than by God’s voice. Both stories show people who needed rebalancing and a second chance to return to devotion. The lesson is simple: We must pause long enough to listen. We must discern whether our actions flow from love or obligation. We must allow God to reshape our priorities so our work becomes worship. Mary and Martha had different callings. The point is not choosing one over the other but learning to listen for God’s voice in our own lives. Listening is the doorway to devotion.

And So, friends, the human spirit stands alone before God. And when we listen with our hearts, our time, our choices, and our calling fall back into balance.

Pray we learn from Jesus. Pray we respond to our calling with devotion, not mere duty. Pray that our priorities reflect God’s purpose. Pray that our work becomes worship. Pray we stop, look, and listen for God’s voice in Scripture, in the Spirit, and in one another. Pray we grow in the holy balance between duty and devotion, faith and reason, until Christ increases in us.

Blessings,

John Lawson
