Good Morning Friends,
The pillar of fire is one of Scripture’s most striking theophanies where God is making Himself visible, present, and unmistakably near. Israel did not choose its own direction; the pillar set the pace, the path, and the boundaries of their life. They moved only when God moved. They rested only when God rested. Their identity was shaped by the God who went before them. Are You Abiding With God’s Timing, Experiencing The Guiding Light Of Jesus?
Exodus 13:21–22 • John 8:12
Scripture “The LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud… and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light…” “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness…”
Message: The pillar of fire was not merely guidance; it was revelation. God was showing Israel His character — faithful, watchful, protective, and unavoidably present. The fire was a sign that their journey was not self‑directed. They were being led by the God who sees, knows, and goes before.
When Jesus says, “I am the light of the world,” He is claiming continuity with that ancient flame. The God who once appeared in fire now appears in flesh. The Light that once hovered above the camp now walks among His people. In Jesus, the theophany becomes personal, relational, and redeeming. He is the true and greater pillar — not a distant blaze, but God-with-us.We are to follow the Light not try to generate it. Led by Christ we are to become a worship space where people know everybody’s name and listen to their stories and honor their questions.
In a world of competing lights, whether political, cultural, technological, or personal, the places where we worship stand as a reminder that the church’s direction is not self‑determined. Christ leads. Christ illumines. Christ gathers and sends. The church’s task is not to invent a mission but to join the mission of the One who still goes before His people like a pillar of fire in the night.
And So, the pillar teaches us that life with God is fundamentally led, not self‑directed. Christ goes before His people still, experienced through Scripture, through the Spirit’s prompting, and through the shared discernment of the church. Ask yourself: Where am I following lesser lights? Where is convenience, fear, urgency, and self‑reliance determining my behavior? What would it mean today to let Christ’s light set my direction rather than my circumstances? How might my life become a signpost pointing others toward the Light who leads?
Pray Lord Jesus, Light of the world, that we experience You going before us as You went before Israel. Pray You lead us through our wilderness places. Pray You keep us close to Your presence. Pray you make our lives witnesses to Your guiding fire, for the sake of Your kingdom and Your church. Amen.
Blessings,
John Lawson
