Seven Signs That Inspire Us to Know God More Deeply

A Devotional for Wonder, Worship, and the Work of Faith

Some truths are so woven into creation, Scripture, and even our own bodies that they quietly preach to us every day. They whisper what Hebrews calls “the things that are made,” revealing the God who made them. These seven signs are not proofs; they are invitations — gentle nudges from a God who delights to be found.

1. Eight Souls on the Ark — and Eight Blood Types

Genesis 7:13

Eight people stepped into the Ark, and through them God restarted the human story. Today, medical science recognizes eight major blood types, the lifeblood of every human being on earth.

It is as if creation itself remembers that God preserves life, renews life, and binds humanity together through a single shared gift: blood that carries life to every cell.

Every heartbeat whispers: “Your life is sustained by the God who rescued humanity.”

2. Light Before the Sun — God as Our First and Final Light

Genesis 1:3–5

Before the sun ever rose, light existed because God spoke it. Light is not dependent on the sun; it is dependent on God.

This means:

  • God shines before circumstances improve.
  • God illumines even when no earthly source is visible.
  • God is light in the places where no light should be.

Corrie ten Boom said it best: “No pit is so deep that God’s light is not deeper still.”

3. The Lamb’s Blood and the Serpent’s Bite

John 1:29; Revelation 12:9

Antivenom — the medicine that neutralizes deadly snake venom — is not made using the blood of lambs. It is myth that the Lamb’s blood heals the serpent’s wound.

However, the gospel echoes through creation: Jesus, the Lamb of God, heals the poison of the serpent Satan. What sin infects, Christ cleanses. What venom destroys, Christ restores.

Every antidote whispers the greater cure: “By His wounds we are healed.”

4. Laminin — The Cross Holding Us Together

Colossians 1:17

Paul writes, “In Him all things hold together.” And in the human body, the protein that literally holds our cells together — laminin — is shaped like a cross.

It is as if God stitched a reminder into our biology: “You are held together by the One who hung on the cross for you.”

Every breath, every heartbeat, every moment of existence is upheld by Christ.

5. The Folded Grave Clothes — The Promise of His Return

John 20:6–7

In Jewish custom, a folded napkin at the table meant: “I’m not finished. I’m coming back.”

When Peter entered the empty tomb, he saw the grave clothes folded.

Not tossed. Not scattered. Folded.

A quiet message from the risen Christ: “I will return.”

Hope is not wishful thinking; it is folded linen in an empty tomb.

6. The Fish — A Hidden Confession in Dangerous Times

ΙΧΘΥΣ (Ichthys)

Early Christians carved the simple outline of a fish to identify themselves. The Greek word ΙΧΘΥΣ stood for:

Iēsous Christos Theou Yios Sōtēr

Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.

A simple symbol carried the weight of the entire gospel. Even today, the fish reminds us that faith is both a confession and a courage.

7. Yahweh — The Name That Sounds Like Breath

Psalm 150

The Hebrew name YHWH is breath-like when spoken. It is the sound of inhaling and exhaling.

At creation, God breathed life into humanity. Every breath since has been a quiet act of praise:

Inhale — Yah Exhale — weh

Psalm 150 ends the Psalter with this truth: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”

Every breath is worship. Every breath is grace. Every breath is God’s name spoken through us.

Conclusion: Seven Signs, One God

These seven wonders — in creation, in Scripture, in our bodies, in the gospel — are not coincidences. They are invitations.

Invitations to awe. Invitations to worship. Invitations to know the God who reveals Himself in every corner of creation.

May these signs stir in you a deeper hunger to learn, love, and follow the God who holds all things together — including you.

Blessings,

John Lawson
