The Spiritual Meaning of Seed
Good Morning Friends,
God said in the Bible some things that are very profound about seeds. There are more than 250 verses in the Bible that speak directly about seeds. There are grass seeds, fruit seeds, and the seed of a man, the seed of a woman, the seed of children, and the seed of the word of God, the seed of our words, the seed of the Body of Christ, the seed of the Church and the seed of our physical body. With something so important I thought that today we would explore The Spiritual Meaning of Seed.
Scripture: Again he began to teach beside the sea. Such a very large crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat on the sea and sat there, while the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched; and since it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.” And he said, “Let anyone with ears to hear listen!” When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; in order that ‘they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.'” And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the word. These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy. But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word, but the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing. And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”
Mark 4:1-20 (NRSV)
But while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away.
Matthew 13:25 (NRSV)
29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.
Galatians 3:29 (NRSV)
Message: Planting seeds and getting harvests are a part of the essential design of God’s creation as well as being an essential part of God’s hidden nature and character. A seed is a self-contained unit designed for the reproduction of a species that has a spiritual as well as physical meaning. A seed contains specific qualities that enables it to work even after extended times outside of the normal environment that they like to grow in. Seed is a unique word that can either be taken as a single unit or as a plural word meaning multiple instances of the same reproductive unit. The first mention of seed in the Bible is within the context of the first chapter of Genesis when God creates the world that we all live in. God says “Let the earth bring forth grass yielding seed”. Then we have the parable of the Sower. There are many valuable things to learn from this parable. We see that seeds play a key role in the spread of the Kingdom of God. Seed laws play a key role in understanding this teaching. Here we learn that God’s word will always produce more people like God. We also might see that as this seed we are joint heirs with Christ by marriage covenant. The church is the Bride of Christ and this too is a seed. By being joined to Him by marriage covenant we become one with Him. The law of Genesis says that the two shall be even as one. We have one body or seed but two heirs just as Eve came from the one body of Adam to make two. This touches on just a small part of the spiritual meaning of seed.
Pray we understand the law of sowing and reaping. Pray we desire growth. Pray we test our soil. Pray we prepare our heart. Pray we sow seeds of faith. Pray that we prepare our hearts and minds so the seeds of love might grow in us. Pray that we put down deep roots breaking through the barriers that keep us living shallow lives. Pray that we live in the light, drinking deep the water of life. Pray that the worries of life not choke out our spiritual development. Pray that we hunger for the seed and soil of His Word…hunger and desire with all our hearts His Love so that it might produce a bountiful harvest in our lives.
Blessings,
John Lawson
