A Man who Serves God.
Good Morning Friends,
Today’s verse, the words of Jesus, were shared as He and the twelve disciples were walking to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. Jesus gathered them together privately near Jericho to explain what was going to happen. He told of his betrayal and death and resurrection. Then the mother of James and John bowed down before him and asked that one of her sons would sit on his right side in his Kingdom. It is here that Jesus tells her that she did not know what she was asking and that suffering would come to them if they followed. Still James and John said that they would endure the suffering. All this disturbed and angered the other disciples for they too wanted the power of being next to Jesus. Then Jesus continues to explain to them the nature of His Kingdom and heals a blind man as an example of their condition but also as an example of A Man who Serves God.
Scripture: The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Matthew 20:28 (NIV)
Message: Friends, we are bondservants for Jesus’ sake called not to be different and above people but more like doormats at the pearly gates. We are to provide spiritual leadership yes but never acting as a superior. In our hearts we must not forget the nature of the ransom demand for our souls. Friends we all need to be saved. We all need Jesus to plead our case as our advocate before the Father. We need a King who serves. And if we are to follow in Christ’s footsteps we too need to be servants for God. But understand this, we are not so much to be servants of man. There is the problem in being servants of humanity. Human praise or blame is not to be our motivation. If it is we will ultimately fail. First we must come to know Jesus and see the debt of service we have to Him. Here the chief motivation behind our service needs to be love for God first then love of others. If our devotion is to the cause of humanity, we will quickly be defeated and discouraged. People are naturally filled with a great deal of ingratitude. Only if we are motivated by our love for God can we overcome this problem. Then, in our love of God, no amount of ingratitude will be able to hinder us from serving one another.
Pray we thank God for a holiness and plan to redeem us. Pray we thank God for the faithfulness of those who serve the will of God. Pray that we be motivated by our love of God. Pray our lives honor the sacrifice of Jesus as a disciple of the Mediator who has paid the price. Pray we understand it is about power for people not power over them that welcomes people at the door.
Blessings,
John Lawson
