“In the Beginning”
Good Morning Friends,
The charter of Man’s mission in the universe begins with the words you know well. But today I want you to rethink what they mean…these words in the sacred text of the Bible…both in Genesis and in John. I want you to think of the role of faith of others in your life at your birth and the birth of faith in you in the moment you first believed.
Today we meditate on the sacred Word of scripture connected for our change and transformation. The words of the birth of the universe: “In the Beginning”
Scripture: In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Genesis 1:1-3 (NRSV)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.
John 1:1-4 (NRSV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
John 10:10 (NRSV)
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End
Revelation 22:13 (NIV)
[God’s] power for us who believe . . . is the same as the mighty strength [God] exerted when he raised Christ from the dead.
Ephesians 1:19-20 (NIV)
Message: The purpose of today’s scripture is to make the point that without God…without the Bible…without Jesus all that exists would be astonishingly empty like the void before creation. If you believe that the absolute purpose for all that exists is God and have never had doubts then you can probably stop reading right here and go find the Sunday comics, but if you have ever doubted that God reveals himself through this text then you may want to read on. You see all this stuff we are experiencing is no coincidence or accident. It is designed to help us to enjoy and experience the best of life in the light of this revelation. The Biblical account leaves no room for any other way….No I am not saying this is the scientific way the world was made. But I am saying that the only source of true wisdom about the way things really work are caught up in this revelation and our purpose is not so much to study it but to live it and anything short of that is a great disappointment for God. Indeed the reading of the Bible is the experience of a life time. And it takes a little getting used to because it draws us in and subjects us to a reality that is a mystery. We have to get a sense of the whole thing from the very beginning and if we don’t get that right all else that follows will be out of sync. But knowing is not enough we have to affirm God and trust in Jesus. Friends, Jesus is the Alpha and Omega of creation. Jesus is the Alpha and Omega of your life and mine. Jesus is the Alpha and Omega of everyone’s death. Jesus is the Alpha and Omega of the Word of God. The question is whether Jesus will be the Alpha and Omega of your Salvation. Friends, the moment you make a decision for Christ your life is a new beginning.
Pray we realize that Jesus came into this world for our love, restoration and salvation. Pray we realize that we are to have life and have it in abundance but that this has more to do about the kingdom to come than material possessions. Pray we experience the beginning of a new relationship. Pray we experience the beginning of a new citizenship in the Kingdom of God. Pray we experience a new family as we become brothers and sisters with other believers. Pray we experience a new purpose in living for Christ. Pray we experience a new power in the strength of God through the gift of His Holy Spirit. Pray we experience a new destiny in the hope of heaven. Pray we experience a new journey…the beginning of a whole new life for the rest of our lives walking with Jesus.
Blessings,
John Lawson
