Wide Awake
Good Morning Friends,
In this day and age we need to be awake to our temporal interests. Folk wisdom has phrased it like this. “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man, healthy wealthy and wise.” Or one of my favorites, “The early bird gets the worm. It is true both temporally and spiritually, the person who is ceases opportunities is usually the one who is Wide Awake.
Scripture: for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Ephesians 5:14 (ESV)
Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.
Psalm 57:8 (NIV)
Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Mark 14:37-38 (NIV)
Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
1 Samuel 3:1-10 (NRSV)
Message: It is necessary for our minds to be in a state of wakefulness when we are praising God and working to be the Body of Christ collectively. This is a great need in our spiritual journey. Maybe you have had a fantasy of putting on head phones and listening to a tape of the Bible while you sleep and the next morning, effortlessly having learned the content. It does not work. Sleep is important for learning and memory consolidation, but no one has been able to show the human brain actually learning new content information during sleep. Only the most basic forms of learning can occur when we are snoozing….conditioning. The shocking truth is that passive listening, like being a passive Christian is not going to get you much at all. That is why we spiritually need to Awake Up!
Pray we awaken our mind to God’s presence. Pray we awaken to a knowledge of our spiritual deficiencies. Pray we do something about it. Pray we wake up and see our need for Jesus. Pray we work in the light of Christ. Pray we are bright eyed. Pray we are awake, listening for God’s call to action.
Blessings,
John Lawson
